MORE THAN JUST A GAME

Suddenly I’m obsessed with badminton. Why have I waited ten years since “racquet activities” in high school gym class to start playing again?

I’ve joined a teacher’s club after school. We meet twice a week for two hours. Next week I’ll start training with a former professional badminton player. She attends our sessions, and provides instruction on proper form and technique. Watch out, Korea! Here comes the next Lee Yong-dae.

Although I teach most of Bibong’s student body, I don’t get a chance to see other teachers often. Opportunities like badminton, or staff volleyball on Fridays, gives me a chance to bond with fellow staff members.

One of the other male teachers asked me to stay for another round after everyone had left this evening. Following our match we talked about life, his family, cross-cultural experiences and teaching. He’s a former English teacher, and a new Korean friend.

I can tell I’ll be sore tomorrow, but tonight was totally worth it. It’s more than just a game.

    1. Joy! Thank you. My lessons just started. I feel like I have to relearn everything. No birdie smacking for a while... I've got to work on my form first. Continue to love life as well!
