Boxes of Pepero for Pepero Day in South Korea.

According to Wikipedia, "Pepero is a cookie stick, dipped in chocolate syrup, manufactured by Lotte Confectionery in South Korea..."

I didn't know today was a holiday until my students practically covered me in boxes of Pepero. Pepero comes in a variety of sizes and flavors. My favorite is Almond Chocolate in the green box.

"Pepero Day is an observance in South Korea similar to Valentine's Day," says Wikipedia, "It is named after the Korean snack Pepero and held on November 11, since the date '11/11' resembles four sticks of Pepero. The holiday is observed mostly by young people and couples, who exchange Pepero sticks, other candies, and romantic gifts..."

In my opinion this holiday seems to be one big way for Lotte to make more money, although I'm not one to complain about receiving tons of chocolate covered sticks.

However, "Lotte denies starting the holiday and instead states that they noticed a bump in Pepero sales around November 11th and after continued popularity they decided to then encourage the holiday with special gift boxes and other promotions..." Thank you, Wikipedia, for your report.

Happy Pepero Day! May you and yours be covered in Pepero too.
