FAMILY TIME

A pile of family webs made by Korean students for a special English class project in South Korea.

For the past two weeks, my fifth graders have been focusing on the lesson, "Can You Tell Me About Your Family?" It teaches students how to introduce family members using basic sentence structures. Students also learn English terms for extended family members in this chapter of the textbook.

As a special project, I had students bring in family photos to share. We made a family web with their pictures to practice writing. It was a fun way for me to learn more about some of my students' families. And after I edited each project, I passed them back for students to present in class.

Speaking is an aspect of English all my students need to practice more. This seems to be the case for most Koreans I've met. Many know a lot of English, but are afraid to use it. Talking about family in class was a great way to get students to speak. Due to large class sizes, I rarely get to hear individual voices. They're so cute!
