NAMBU BUS TERMINAL

Inside Nambu Bus Terminal on a Sunday afternoon in Seoul, South Korea.

A good place to experience Korea is in a bus station. Here you get a taste of the culture. It’s a mixing of old and new—a blend of small shops and large corporate chains. Do you want some odeng (fish noodles on a stick), or would your prefer a Whopper from Burger King? How about a fresh walnut cake, hot off the press? Maybe a chocolate frosted cake donut from Dunkin Donuts sounds better.

Nambu Bus Terminal is always busy, especially on Sunday afternoons. It’s one of many stations in the city of Seoul, but the only one with express access to and from Ochang. If I don’t purchase a return ticket for one of the express buses in advance, I have to take a roundabout way home. My favorite thing to do while waiting for departure is sit and watch the hustle and bustle of it all.
